The Bessin is an area in Normandy, corresponding to the ancient territory of the gaulish tribe , the Bajocasse, who also gave their name to the city of Bayeux, central town of the Bessin. The name of Normandy is derived from the settlement and conquest of the territory by Vikings from the 9th century, and confirmed by treaty in the 10th century. For a century and a half following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Normandy and England were linked by Norman rulers, but following 1204 all of Normandy was ultimately held by France. The Bessin is primarily a cattle rearing region, although cider, calvados, fishing and tourism are also major activities. Much of it is enclosed within the ‘Parc Regional du Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin’.
